Tracking index

This instrument allows for the determination of the tracking resistance indices of solid insulating materials with voltages up to 600 V. This is tested when their surface is exposed to the action of water containing ionic contaminants under electrical stress.

International Reference Standards: IEC 60112; IEC 60335; IEC 60065; IEC 61029

Additional Information

  • This method simulates tracking currents on the surface of insulating material by dropping solution droplets between electrodes.
  • During normal use, a material can be exposed to moisture or dirt. If this contamination is conductive, it can affect the material’s insulation properties.
  • The sample under analysis is subjected to a variable voltage from 0 to 600V via two electrodes that exert a 1N pressure on the sample. Drops of a conductive solution are dropped between these electrodes at intervals adjustable by the operator.
  • A drop counter allows the number of drops to be set.
  • If the tracking current exceeds 0.5 A during the test, the instrument automatically stops the test and records a negative result (FAIL).
  • Otherwise, the test will conclude after the instrument has released the pre-set number of drops.
  • The instrument will go into ‘stand-by’ and indicate that the test has been passed (OK).
