The Bally Flexometer (or Bally Resistance Flexing Tester) is an instrument used to assess a material’s ability to resist cracking or other forms of failure caused by repeated bending. This test method is particularly suitable for flexible materials like leathers, coated fabrics, and other textiles commonly used in footwear uppers.
Â
In the Bally test, the specimen is first folded in half and secured in a primary clamp. Then, it’s inverted, and its free end is fastened in a second clamp, positioned at a 90° angle to the first. The initial clamp then operates with a continuous oscillatory motion, following a fixed angle and at a determined speed, thereby inducing cyclic flexing of the specimen.
At regular intervals, the number of cycles performed is recorded, and a visual assessment is conducted to detect any damage, such as cracking or other signs of material failure. The test can be carried out on both dry and wet samples, maintained at room temperature.
