A softness tester is an instrument used to measure the softness of leather. It features a small pneumatic control valve that applies force to the instrument’s sensor (or probe). This sensor descends on the surface of the skin, previously attached to the base of the device, following a predetermined speed and pressure.
During the process, the softness value is displayed via an indicator located on the pressure arm. This value reflects the resistance offered by the leather upon contact, thereby providing an objective measure of its softness. This is a crucial test for evaluating the quality and workability of leather materials in the fashion, leather goods, and furniture industries.
