The salt spray chamber test method is commonly used to verify the corrosion resistance of products that may meet oxidizing agents during their use.
The reference standards for the correct execution of the test are ISO 9227 and ASTM B117.
The test involves placing the product under examination in a chamber where a 5% NaCl saline test solution is atomized, creating a highly corrosive environment. This test is also known as NSS (Neutral Salt Spray). Generally, results are expressed as the number of hours without detecting corrosion (for example: 720 hours in NSS according to ISO 9227).
There are also tests performed with alternative solutions such as Acetic Acid Salt Spray (ASS) and Copper-accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray (CASS). These are typically used for decorative coatings, but they require thorough cleaning of the chamber after use.
Various chamber sizes are available
