Vertical Flame Testing for Cables

This vertical flame propagation test instrument for cables is designed to evaluate the fire behavior of electrical and optical cables in accordance with international standards IEC 60332-3-10 and KS C IEC 60332-3-21~25 (Categories A~D). The test involves measuring the vertical flame spread along the cable after controlled ignition within a defined volume combustion chamber with a preset airflow.

The apparatus is equipped with an adjustable burner that, when tilted at 20 degrees, also allows for testing according to IEEE 383 (equivalent to IEEE 1202). This offers greater application flexibility and the ability to test materials for international markets.

In addition to evaluating flame propagation, the instrument can detect fundamental fire dynamics parameters, such as Heat Release Rate (H.R.R.) and Smoke Production Rate (S.P.R.). These are key elements for analyzing the safety performance of materials in case of fire.

Additional Information

  • The test chamber has dimensions of 1,000±100 mm (W) x 2,000±100 mm (D) x 4,000±100 mm (H).
  • The bottom part of the test chamber is raised from the ground, while the rear side is made of insulating material.
  • At the bottom of the test chamber, there is an air supply opening measuring 800±20 mm (W) x 400±10 mm (D) x 150±10 mm (H).
  • At the rear of the upper section of the test chamber, there is an exhaust opening of 300±30 mm (W) x 1,000±100 mm (D) to allow smoke emission during the test.
  • A safety device is installed at the front of the instrument to prevent flashback.
  • The instrument records all test conditions via a dedicated program.
  • The gas and air flow rates supplied to the burner can be compensated by adjusting temperature and pressure.
  • The instrument automatically performs this compensation using the management program installed on the computer.
  • In case of excessive combustion, the test automatically stops thanks to the Water Spray device.
  • The instrument’s program allows test parameters to be set according to the requirements of various standards and the 70,000 BTU/h (British Thermal Units per hour) capacity.
