The Glow Wire Test accurately determines the combustion temperature of a material by subjecting it to contact with an incandescent wire. This simulates the potential effects of a short-period, overheated electrical system and the associated fire risks.
A specially shaped glow wire is heated to the temperature required by the standard and then brought into contact with the test specimen, which is subsequently examined.
The test system features a motorized slide that moves the specimen into contact with the glow wire.
At the end of the time specified by the standard, the specimen will automatically return to its initial position.
