Rapid Crack Propagation

A system used to determine the critical crack propagation pressure and temperature in plastic pipes.

Rapid crack propagation (RCP) is a type of failure that occurs due to rapid fracture. Cracks are believed to develop at internal defects following an impulsive event, and can quickly grow to large sizes.

RCP occurs in pressurized systems that have stored enough energy to cause cracks to propagate faster than the energy is released.

The system also has the capability to operate at low temperatures through the use of a thermostatic chamber.

RCP Test Unit

  • The RCP Test Unit consists of a tower from which a weight is released, allowing the pipe to be tested at a variable speed from 1 m/s up to 20 m/s.
  • It features a touchscreen interface that allows you to input all test parameters: conditioning time, sample temperature, internal pipe pressure, and impact velocity.
  • A safety system prevents the impact of the hammer on the pipe if the sample is not positioned correctly.

 

Conditioning Chamber

  • Equipped with pneumatic doors, the conditioning chamber saves time and energy consumption during the test execution.
  • The target temperature of -30°C for the test specimen can be reached in just 10 minutes.
  • The chamber dimensions are customizable according to customer needs and can vary based on the number of pipe samples you wish to condition simultaneously.

 

Sample Transfer Unit

  • This system is designed to allow the sample to be moved from the conditioning chamber to the test tower within 3 minutes of specimen conditioning.
  • The system includes an integrated monitor that provides information related to the ongoing test.
